Allied Tank
was originally founded in 1946 by Louis Field, Al Margulies,
and David Constantine. They were prompted by the need for better
customer service by fuel oil delivery people in their area. After
the second World War there was a distinct equipment shortage.
Suppliers for Tank Trucks and related equipment were backed up
for many months. It was much like any other cold winter! Louis
Field had been both a mechanic, and an oil delivery person for
several years, along with wartime experience in metal working
at the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard. Al Margulies ran his own
Oil Delivery Business (Margulies Oil) , David Constantine was
a also metal worker during the second world war.
The facility
would specialize in both repairs and new equipment manufacturing
Louis Field, being the technical coordinator knew he could turn
around new equipment in a third the time that others were able
to fight their backlog. The name "Allied" also had special meaning
at the time. It symbolized both the alliance of Al, Lou, and
Dave (A,L,D: Allied) as well as the spirit of "Victory" which
was prevalent and very American at the time.
Moving
about a dozen New Tank Trucks in their first year Allied fulfilled
their expectations and was well on their way to future growth.
As Louis field became more prevalent in the business than his
partners, he eventually purchased their shares of the business.
Al left in 1951, David in 1956. Once the company belonged entirely
to Louis Field, his spirit of quality and innovation could not
be swayed by other peoples interests, and has not been to date.
Allied Tank
was among the premier innovators in Aluminum in the early 1950's.
Our work in developing the first Aluminum Tank Trucks greatly
increased payload and profitability to the industry. Allied was
the first volume manufacturer of Aluminum Tank Truck equipment.
Our first location was at 22nd Street and Susquehanna Blvd. In
North Philadelphia. Cheesesteaks and soft pretzels weren't the
only innovations coming from Philly (though they tend to taste
better than a tank truck...)
The original
location was very close to downtown (AKA center city) Philadelphia
known as "North Philly". The original space was rented two opening
garage of approximately 10,000 square feet. But the company was
bound for fast growth.
By 1953 the
company had outgrown its original space, Lou and Dave decided
to take the leap into a larger location. The Next move was to
24th and Brown streets in Philadelphia in a former Bus terminal.
Now occupying approximately 30,000 sq. Ft. With additional outside
storage. Allied prospered and grew in that location until 1965.
In nearly a decade we were ready for our next big move. As the
company was growing larger, the city real estate became less
cost effective. Suburban sprawl was also creating a workforce
outside of the city. This made a move to Collegeville PA attractive
and the time was right for another big move.
This growth
continued until 1990 when we reorganized and trimmed down
management related overhead. Our move then to Norristown PA has
made us a leaner, stronger company than we have ever been. Allied
today can offer an extensive list of services, and our combination
of customer service, and technical capability are still your
number one source for bulk delivery vehicle information. Most
of our accounts are considered friends first, and our motto "Allied
Quality - It's Everywhere" is much more than just words.
While our attention
to detail makes it easy to see and feel Allied Quality, if you
look for it you'll find that quality describes the full equipment
ownership experience we provide. When you have a question about
your equipment, you'll get a fast knowledgeable reply. If you
want information about maintaining your equipment we're just
